How To Stay Safe During A Power Outage?

Here are some steps you can take to ensure your safety during a power outage:

1. Unplug electrical devices

To prevent any harm or damage caused by power surges, make sure to disconnect all electrical appliances from the power source.

2. Avoid using wet electronics

When electronic devices come into contact with water, they can become conductive and increase the risk of electric shock. It's best to keep them away from any moisture.

3. Prevent carbon monoxide poisoning

Generators emit a colorless and odorless gas called carbon monoxide, which can be deadly. To avoid poisoning, always operate your generator outdoors and keep it at least 20 feet away from doors and windows.

4. Don't consume contaminated food

Floodwaters can contaminate food with harmful substances, making it extremely dangerous to consume. Be cautious and avoid eating any food that has been soaked in floodwaters.

5. Exercise caution with candles

If you need to use candles for lighting, be careful not to place them near flammable objects or leave them unattended. Whenever possible, opt for flashlights instead.

6. Stay away from floodwater

While it may be challenging, try to keep a safe distance from floodwater during dangerous flooding situations. Your safety should always be a top priority.

7. Check up on the people in your vicinity

Reach out to those in your vicinity to ensure their well-being.

8. Conserve as much electricity as you can

Disconnect all unused electronic devices and appliances. It is crucial to preserve electricity and utilize it efficiently to maximize limited resources. Remember, prioritizing safety is essential during a hurricane or power outage.

9. Furthermore, avoid entering the water that still inundates the streets. This can jeopardize your safety since floodwaters in the streets may conceal debris, sharp objects, power lines, and other hazardous items. Moreover, floodwaters often contain sewage and bacteria, and exposure to such water can result in severe illness or infection.
